PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are a large group of chemical compounds that are very persistent in the environment and are used in many industrial processes and products due to their water-, grease- and dirt-repellent properties. Due to their potential health risks and their far-reaching environmental impact, precise analysis of these substances is of great importance.
Our expertise in PFAS analysis
UFAG Laboratorien AG offers you the reliable determination of PFAS in the following matrices/samples:
- Food
- Infant formula
- Water (drinking, ground and surface water)
Thanks to our extensive experience and state-of-the-art analytical equipment (LC-MS/MS), up to 30 PFAS compounds can be identified and quantitatively determined. The analysis methods are established according to international standards and guarantee the highest quality and safety.

Why is PFAS analysis important?
PFAS have received increased attention in recent years due to their persistent nature and potential health effects. The uptake of PFAS into crops occurs via the roots. Consequently, they can enter the food chain and accumulate there. Some PFAS are suspected of causing cancer, endocrine disruption and other health problems. It will therefore be essential to closely monitor their concentrations in the environment and in products.
In line with EU legislation, the FSVO has therefore set maximum levels in foodstuffs and is reviewing the current maximum levels for drinking water and animal foodstuffs (perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS)).
For certain foods of animal origin, the FSVO introduced maximum levels for selected PFAS on 1 February 2024. The maximum levels are based on the legislation of the European Union EU (EU Regulation 2022/2388) for the four priority substances PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS and their sum.
The Ordinance of the Federal Department of Home Affairs FDHA on drinking water and water in publicly accessible baths and shower facilities (TBDV) currently regulates three PFAS with maximum values: 0.3 µg/l each for PFOS and PFHxS and 0.5 µg/l for PFOA. The adoption of the "PFAS20 regulation of the EU" for the 20 PFAS relevant to drinking water is expected in the next amendment in 2026.
