Exporting food products – opportunities and challenges

High-quality Swiss food specialities are very popular on foreign markets and generate around CHF 3.5 billion in sales – and rising. That is why an increasing number of food companies are seizing potential growth opportunities abroad.

European Union member states, the USA, Canada, as well as China, Japan and Russia are all markets that are contributing to the growth of the Swiss export industry. In order to seize these growth opportunities in the export of food products, it is essential to address the market conditions and regulations specific to each country.

The Swiss food industry generates a total of around CHF 18.8 billion in sales every year. This includes 207 companies that primarily produce fresh meat and other meat products (around CHF 3.9 billion), milk and other diary products (around CHF 3.3 billion), convenience products (around CHF 2.1 billion) and chocolate (CHF 1.7 billion). The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) will provide an expert overview in the specialist area of Life Science and Facility Management as part of their specialist event “Global Food Legislation – Food Law of Global Export Markets” at the 10th Wädenswiler Conference on Food Law 2015. Speakers from the USA, Brazil, Russia, Japan and China will provide information on the legal basis for food and important legal acts, the responsible authorities, important regulatory areas of the specific food legislation (hygiene, food safety, labelling).
