New labelling for food products

The EU food product information ordinance mandates the declaration of the "Big 7" on food products in the future. Furthermore, additional information such as portion size or GDA (guideline daily amount) information may be optionally listed on the packaging.

For food products sold in bulk, allergy labelling is now mandatory, and imitation food products must be clearly disclosed as such with additional information. The aim here is to help consumers make a decision in selecting products.

In Switzerland, a legislative amendment for food product labelling is also imminent and may make it necessary to redesign current labels.

Susanne Täuber offers an overview of the new requirements for correctly indicating nutritional values in her article in the October 2013 issue of the magazine Lebensmittel-Technologie.
